First Khutbah
Summary of today's Khutbah
Islam teaches us that honouring our parents is not simply a cultural tradition but a sacred obligation and a means of attaining Allah’s pleasure.
Allah says:
*﴿وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا﴾*
— “And treat your parents with kindness” (Qur’an 17:23).
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned against
«عُقُوقُ الْوَالِدَيْنِ»
— “Being undutiful to one’s parents”,
identifying it as one of the gravest major sins (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5976). Growing up in Australia, Muslim youth may face differences in opinions, cultural values, lifestyles, and expectations between generations. However, *independence does not justify disrespect, and disagreement should never lead to disobedience, arrogance, or humiliation.* Islam allows us to express different opinions while maintaining kindness, gratitude, patience, and respectful communication. Even when parents are mistaken, their rights to honourable treatment remain.
This khutbah reminds young Muslims that true maturity is not merely making independent decisions, but preserving love, respect, and compassion for the parents who sacrificed so much for them.
