First Khutbah - 1:25 PM
Summary of today's Khutbah
As we approach the blessed month of Ramaḍān, this khutbah reminds us that true preparation is not limited to fasting and prayer but also includes purifying our wealth and hearts through zakāh. Zakāh is the third pillar of Islam and is repeatedly mentioned alongside ṣalāh in the Qur’an, highlighting its central importance.
The khutbah explains that zakāh is an act of worship and purification, not a voluntary donation. It cleanses wealth from hidden harm, removes greed from the heart, strengthens social justice, and brings barakah and increase by the promise of Allah. Withholding zakāh, on the other hand, brings severe consequences in this life and the Hereafter, as clearly warned in the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Practical guidance is provided for Muslims living in the West, including:
- Zakah on cash, savings, and accumulated salaries
- Zakah rulings related to superannuation (retirement funds)
- Zakah obligations while having a home loan or mortgage
- The necessity of intention (Niyah) when paying zakat
- Correct recipients of zakat and common mistakes to avoid
The khutbah concludes by emphasising that paying zakat is a spiritual cleansing and a preparation for Ramadan, just as wuḍūʾ prepares a person for salah. By fulfilling this obligation sincerely, believers enter Ramadan with purified wealth, lighter hearts, and greater readiness for worship.
May Allah accept our zakat, purify our wealth, and allow us to reach Ramadan in a state of obedience and sincerity.
