Time, Trials, and Truth: Standing Firm and Preparing for a New Year - by Imam Hatem Saad

1st Khutbah - 1:15 PM
Summary of today's Khutbah

As the year comes to an end, this Jumuʿah khutbah reminded the community that time is one of Allah’s greatest trusts and one of the first matters we will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment. While society often marks the new year with celebration and distraction, Islam calls believers to pause, reflect, and realign their lives with purpose and accountability.

The khutbah emphasised that Islam does not prohibit enjoyment or rest, but rather regulates it through clear moral and spiritual boundaries. Muslims are encouraged to enjoy life in ways that do not compromise prayer, involve what Allah has forbidden, corrupt the heart, or distract from their ultimate purpose. With the right intention, even rest and family time can become acts of worship.

Special focus was given to the virtue of worship and steadfastness during times of fitnah - an especially relevant message for Muslims living in Australia and the wider Western world. The Prophet ﷺ taught that worship during periods of confusion and moral pressure carries immense reward, likening it to migration to him ﷺ. Those who remain firm upon faith in difficult times may receive rewards equal to many times that of earlier generations due to the challenges they face.

The khutbah also clarified the Islamic stance on attending gatherings where alcohol and open sin are present, highlighting the importance of maintaining one’s faith with dignity while avoiding environments that normalise disobedience to Allah. Practical guidance was offered on how to decline such invitations respectfully without severing relationships.

Drawing lessons from the life of the Prophet ﷺ and the Companions, the khutbah highlighted their balanced approach to life — combining joy, family, and rest with unwavering obedience and immediate submission to Allah’s commands.

The message concluded with practical spiritual resolutions for the coming year: strengthening one’s relationship with Allah, safeguarding daily prayers, and reducing distractions that erode faith and waste time.

The khutbah served as a reminder that true success is not measured by how we celebrate the passing of time, but by how faithfully we use it in obedience to Allah
